2 Athens, August 2004. There are five hundred yards left in the Olympic women’s rowing final. The teams are made up of eight rowers including a helmsman, and the Australian team is three seconds behind Romania, who is in the lead. Suddenly, Sally Robbins stops rowing. Within the last four hundred yards, she releases her oars and leans over backwards, into the lap of her teammate. The Australian team finishes in last place. “They threatened to throw me overboard,” Robbins says afterwards. The media gives her the name “Lay Down Sally,” and the case stirs up hefty debate in Australia, and even the Prime Minister, John Howard, gets involved. The Rowing Association takes measures to give Sally Robbins and the rest of the team professional counseling to deal with the incident. Nonetheless, one of the teammates is banned from the national team for two years after having struck Robbins during a welcome-home dinner in Australia.
